The holy grail Marshall JTM-45 amp bar none – an early 1964 Block Logo with the Radiospares Output Transformer. One of the first gold plexi panel amps ever built. It has a singing sustain, musical compression and a bold smoothenss that none of the later Drake OT equipped amps can match. It is the same Output Transformer that was used in the earlier iterations of the JTM45 lineage – like the Offset amps and later split front variants.
The most prominent user of this specific model is Eric Clapton who played these heads live with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers as well as at the end of his time with the Yardbirds.
The earliest iterations of the JTM45 were also used by Pete Townshend from the Who – these would have had the same spec as this Block Logo amp and it would be a good pick for the early the Who records.
This particular amp we captured has a serial number that is a single digit number away from the Serial 1028, which is the one that Clapton used (which is another head, not the one that was sold through Bonhams – serial 1178).
The amp has a unique, warm and singing tone that is exceptional for Blues, in particular with the early Celestion G12 Alnico speakers in an original 1966 4X12 Pinstripe cab that were one of the 2 cab options used for this pack.
An inherently old school vintage voice that confidently delivers wonderful clean and edge of breakup tones, as well as singing bluesy lead tones.
The other Cab option features vintage 20W G12M Greenbacks with original cones, which is another era correct option for these amps and gives it a larger tone, which still is unique and different from the later higher power handling speakers.
The amp is set up with vintage Mullard 12AX7’s, GZ34 rectifier and the legendary GEC KT66 tubes throughout for unparalleled authenticity and optimal performance.
The set features 30 AMP+CAB captures of the amp. The amp was recorded through a 1966 Marshall 4X12 straight Pinstripe cab Celestion G12 Alnico speakers (original Pusonic cones) and the same cab with Celestion G12M 20W speakers (original Pulsonic cones), which are the era correct variants for the Block Logo JTM45’s. The mics used were 2x Royer R121, a Beyerdynamic M160 and a Neumann U87. Please refer to the full list of included captures in the product photo section.
